MMRHL provides Guidance and Counsel
Markham Men’s Recreational Hockey League, also known as the MMRHL, began it operations in 1977-78 and, in 2017-18, we celebrated our 40th year as a non profit grassroots organization providing a recreation opportunity for adult residents of the City of Markham, both past and present.
Originally formed as a 6 team league
With 96 participants, we have grown to 20 teams with over 320 members. Registration is limited to those who have attained the age of twenty-five in their year of application. We have 3 divisions determined by age and, at our 35th anniversary celebrations, it was announced that these divisions have been renamed the Metzler, Mara and Oliver divisions in honour of Jim Metzler, Jim Mara and Chuck Oliver who were original executive members of the league. Our annual Mowling Golf Tournament, held in May, is named in honour of Keith Mowling who was also an original executive member.
Our season commences in mid September and ends the first week in April with our annual tournament. Games are played Sunday evenings at both Centennial and Mt. Joy Arenas.
MMRHL provides Guidance and Counsel
At the request of Markham Parks and recreation, MMRHL provides guidance and counsel regarding the future direction of all recreational activities within the city. Also, as an active member of the Markham Sport Council, MMRHL supports their efforts to promote sport as an integral component of daily life. In 2008, Mayor Frank Scarpitti, acting on behalf of the Council, presented MMRHL with an Award of Achievement recognizing our contribution of 40 years to the recreational needs of our citizens.
Over the years our league has contributed over $100,000 to local charities.

keeping the unruly divisions in order is no simple task.
